How Residential (grid-tied) Solar Works:

how grid-tied solar works
  1. Residential solar captures sunlight during the day and converts it into direct current (DC).
  2. Solar inverters receive that DC from the panels and converts it into alternate current (AC, the electricity you use in your home). You use this electricity when you need it and send any excess back to the grid or to a battery storage system.
  3. Excess electricity your system generates can be stored in batteries for use later when the sun is not shining. When the battery is fully charged, you can send the excess electricity back to the grid.
  4. Measure your electricity use online to keep an eye on your solar system’s health and gain insight about your energy habits
  5. The power grid receives any excess electricity you generate and can allow you to get a credit on your bill for that excess. You continue to use electricity from the grid when your solar system does not generate enough to satisfy your needs.

Solar is swiftly becoming a primary source of energy in Canada, particularly in our sun-blessed province of Southern Alberta.

Experts project that by 2050, solar power will hold the top spot as the most significant energy source globally. Grid-tied solar setups for your home (rooftop panels, backup batteries, EV charging) offer a smart solution by allowing us to connect to the power grid.

Get Credit for Unused Power

Alberta has a Micro-Generation Regulation allowing you to send any excess energy you’ve generated back to the Province’s electricity grid in exchange for a credit. Plus, optional batteries can help you utilize the power you generate during the day, at night.

  • Lock in your electricity costs for the life of your Solar
  • Increase your property value
  • The addition of battery storage saves on your electricity bill at peak times

Top-Notch Work & Transparent Pricing

We recently hired Kilts & Cables to complete an unfinished electrical project in our basement. When David came to the initial meeting, he was prompt and very professional. That evening, he sent us a quote for the job which was very thorough and his prices were exactly as discussed. When it came to the actual job, he arrived on the schedule we agreed on and he accommodated us when we had to make a last minute cancellation. His work is top notch and we are extremely happy with the finished work. We highly recommend Kilt and Cables and would definitely hire David and his team again.
